これが大正・昭和時代を代表する歌舞伎役者、六代目尾上菊五郎さんの辞世の句であることは比較的よく知られています。今でも「六代目」と言えば自動的に六代目菊五郎を指すほどの、歌舞伎史に残る名優です。
この辞世の句は「踊りの道を究めるにはとても一生では足りない。死んでも、あの世でも踊り続けなければとても満足のいく踊り手にはなれない」ということを意味しています。凄まじい芸魂です。
また、文楽の世界でも、義太夫の人間国宝だった故竹本越路大夫は、「義太夫の修行は一生では足りなかった。もう一生欲しかった」と仰ったと伝えられています。
通訳と芸能の道はもちろん同じではありませんが、「一生が修行」という面においてはどちらも同じだと思っています。一生修行であることに対して何の疑問も抱くことのない人種（？）の一つ、それが通訳者なのです。

In the world of Bunraku Puppet Theatre, another legendary figure, the great Gidayu Master, Koshijitayu Takemoto, is said to be remarked in his old age,
"One life is not enough for a Gidayu chanter. I need another life to master the art."
Of course, being a conference interpreter is not exactly the same as being a master of traditional arts. Still, what the old masters said should resonate with us interpreters. We interpreters are the kind of people who accept without question that being a good interpreter is to pursue a never-ending road to perfection. A bit cheesy but true.
