同時通訳は、通常は会議場常設の通訳ブース、または仮設の通訳ブース（ちょっとした小屋のような部屋）から配信しますが、ここ数年の技術の発達により通訳者が遠隔から同時通訳をする方法が多く用いられるようになっています。これは、インターネットを利用した同時通訳プラットフォームを利用するもので、通常二人いる同時通訳者は、会場とは全く別の国にある自宅から、自分のPCを同通コンソールとして使いながら同時通訳をする形態です。
同時通訳者を会議場まで呼んでくる費用、つまり交通費や宿泊費、および仮設通訳ブースのレンタル・設置費用がかかりませんので、同時通訳の利用者にとっては非常にコスパのよい通訳形態だというのがセールスポイントです。
しかし、残念なことに、遠隔同時通訳の技術はまだ完全ではありません。最も大きな問題は原音声の質です。大きな会議専門の会場でしっかりした音響設備がある場合ならよいのですが、社内会議などで机に例の円盤状のマイクが一つ置いてあるだけ、といったような条件ですと、遠隔地にいる通訳者の耳に届く音声の質がかなり悪くなることもあります。ですので、できるだけ発言者一人一人がピン留めタイプのマイクを使うか、写真のような机置きタイプのマイクを、参加者全員の前に一つづづ置いていただけると、通訳者への負担が軽減されます。
通訳者だからといって蝙蝠並みに聴力が良いわけではありません。発言者の音声がが割れて聞こえたり、反響したりしていては、十分な通訳をすることはできません。遠隔通訳という方式を選んで経費節減をしたつもりでも、発言者の話した内容が十分に通訳されなかったら、会議そのものの意味がなくなってしまいます。ですから、遠隔同時通訳という方法を選ぶ場合は、お客様にもある一定の努力をしていただく必要があるということを、覚えて居て頂ければ幸いです。
Remote Simultaneous Interpreting, a new mode of interpreting currentlly spreading like wildfire, is promoted as an attractive way for end users to save costs. They can save money becaue they don't have to pay for interpreting equipment, interpreting booth, interpreters' travel/accomodation expenses since (behold!) interpreters are sitting at their desk at home using their own PCs as interpreting consoles.
It may sound wonderful for users of interpreting services, but there are catches. The biggest catch is the sound quality for interpreters. As interpreters can't interpret what we can't hear, the quality of the sound coming from the meeting/conference room matters, a lot. However those disk-type, all-direction conference call microphones are often used to transmit the voices of speakers to their interpreters' ears. Simply put, those microphones are not good enough. They are not even good enough for conference calls, let alone for simultanesous interpreting.
So, what I ask is simple. Please invest on good quality individual microphones like the ones shown in the picture below. What interpreters can't hear is what is not interpreted and that is what you, end users, miss. Which is more important, saving a bit of money or fully taking part in the conference?
