ウェブ会議と電話会議回線を組み合わせて同時通訳を加える方法
有料のZoomには初歩的な同時通訳機能は付いていますが、Webexなどの他のウェブ会議プラットフォームにはまだその機能はありません。そこで、理想的な方法とは言えないまでも、ウェブ会議と電話会議の回線を併用して同時通訳を会議参加者に提供することも行われています。
例えば、会議そのものは英語を中心に行われる場合、通訳を聞く必要がない参加者はウェブ会議のみにログインします。一方通訳を聞きたい参加者は、PCでウェブ会議にログインすると同時に、スマホから電話会議にもログインします。そしてウェブ会議の画面をPCで見ながら、音声はスマホから聞くという方法です。
その間同時通訳者も、個々のPCでウェブ会議の音声を聞きながら自分のスマホに日本語訳をアウトプットします。この時大切なのは、電話会議の回線をセットアップする際に通訳者以外の参加者は常にミュートになるように設定することです。
また、ウェブ会議で発言をする参加者は必ず一人一台のPCを使い、PC内臓のマイクではなく、別刺しのマイク付きのヘッドフォンを使ってください。そして、発言中以外は必ずご自分のマイクをミュートにしてください。
参加者と通訳者のインターネット環境によっては途中で音が悪くなることもありますが、以上の方法で基本的には同時通訳付きのウェブ会議を行うことは可能です。なお、遠隔同時通訳は通訳者への負担が特に重いため、90分ごとに休憩時間を入れるようにお願いいたします。手配する通訳者の人数の目安は、会議時間5時間までで２人、それを超える場合は3人が適切でしょう。
ウェビナーや大規模/フォーマルな会議の場合は、事前に通訳者も含めたリハーサル日を設けることをお勧めします（通訳者への料金が発生いたします）。
Web conference with added tel-conference line(s) using interpreters
While paid Zoom contracts offer a simultaneous interpretation function, other web conferencing platforms, such as Webex, do not. But there are ways, although not ideal, to add simultaneous interpreting to web conferencing by setting up a separate teleconferencing loop to provide simultaneous interpretation to conference participants.
For example, if the meeting itself is conducted in English, participants who do not need to hear the interpreters will only log into the web meeting. On the other hand, those participants who wish to listen to the interpreters log in to the conference call on the smartphone in addition to logging in to the web conference on the PC. This way, they can hear simultaneous interpretation from their smartphones while watching the web conference screen on their PCs.
Meanwhile, the simultaneous interpreters provide Japanese interpretation to their smartphones (switching over every 15 minutes) while listening to the web conference audio on their PCs. Please note that it is very important to set up the conference call in a way that all non-interpreters are always muted.
Also, make sure that each participant uses an individual PC inserted with a headphone with an attached microphone instead of the microphone built into the PC. And make sure they mute themselves when not speaking.
Depending on the internet environment of the participants and interpreters, the sound quality may vary, but basically it is possible to hold a web conference with simultaneous interpretation in this way. Please note that remote simultaneous interpreters require a break every 90 minutes or so due to the heavy cognitive load the task imposes on them. As a guideline for the number of interpreters, arrange 2 interpreters for a meeting length of up to 5 hours, and 3 interpreters beyond 5 hours.
In case of a webinar or a large/formal conference, a separate rehearshal, including the interpreters (subject to a charge), is highly recommended.
