I would like to introduce you to a Japanese animation series "Kotaro Lives Alone" available on Netflix in multiple languages.
The series is based on the comic book series of the same title and deals with a very serious theme of child abuse and neglect while giving readers plenty of comical moments to laugh out loud as
well as an overwhelming desire to hug and kiss the main character, Kotaro, who is only 4 years old but lives alone in a small flat.
I watched the entire series (10 episodes) 3 times back to back in both the original Japanese and in English dubbing and found the English version funnier and more touching than the original
one.
One of the reasons I prefer the English version is the way Kotaro's lines are translated. The little boy speaks and thinks in an archaic feudal lord sort of manner due to the influence of his
favourite TV anime series (watch out for the reason why he loves that TV anime!) . And the English translator (s) rendered them so well that it was a real pleasure to listen to him speak like a
feudal lord or knight of bygone eras (helped by the cute husky voice of the voice actor).
And this is where the power of human translation comes in. How do you translate lines spoken by a 4-year-old boy in a pseudo feudal lord way into another language while making sure they: 1)
actually sound feudal lord-ish, 2) are cute and funny and 3) render the character's personality and sincerity so that readers cannot help being deeply touched?

児童虐待とニグレクトを扱った津島マミ先生原作の漫画「コータローは一人暮らし」のアニメ版をNetflixで発見しました。設定が英語になっていたため最初は英語の吹き替えで観ましたが、主人公コータローのあまりの可愛さといじらしさに、一気に全回分観たあとに、元の日本語→もう一度英語、と合計3回続けて観てしまいました。
コータローは、大好きなTVアニメ「トノサマン」の影響で殿様言葉で話しますが＊、それが実にうまく英語に翻訳されているのに感心しました。「殿様っぽく」4歳児が喋っているセリフを英語に翻訳するのは決して簡単なことではありません。かつ、4歳児の可愛さとおかしみもしっかり伝わってきて、翻訳者の実力がうかがえます。
＊「トノサマン」を好きな理由に涙します。
AIによる翻訳は通訳のレベルはかなり高くなっており、AIで済むことはAIに任せるのが効率的だと思います。しかし、このような文化的な知識やウィットを必要とする場面では、やはりまだ人間の知性が必要なのだな、実感できる作品でした。
これは、通訳でも同じです。通訳者は「言葉を置き換えてくれる」存在だとお考えになるのなら、AIでも十分役に立つと思います。しかし、良い通訳者はコミュニケーションのプロです。通訳する場面（会議やミーティング、視察など）において、その目的の成功に資するため、単なる言語の置き換えをはるかに超えた気配り、目配りをしています。是非その力をご活用ください。
